About this song:

"The Whiffenpoof Song" originated in 1909 as the signature song of the Yale Whiffenpoofs, an a cappella group at Yale University. The lyrics were adapted from a poem by Meade Minnigerode and George S. Pomeroy, set to music by Tod Galloway.

Early performances were limited to Yale, but the song quickly spread nationally through college publications and recordings by professional vocal groups in the 1920s and 1930s.

The song’s nostalgic and singable melody has inspired occasional jazz interpretations, particularly by vocal ensembles seeking traditional repertoire. Its association with collegiate culture has contributed to its enduring recognition.
